Chelsea barracks Phase 1 + 2

The development at Chelsea Barracks was a large-scale project aimed at transforming the former military site into a luxury residential and mixed-use community. The development, by Qatari Diar, is divided into two phases:

Phase 1: Focused on the construction of high-end residential buildings, including luxury apartments and townhouses. It emphasized architectural excellence and the integration of green spaces. The development aimed to blend contemporary design with the site's historical significance, including preserving heritage elements like the original military barracks' perimeter wall.

Phase 2: Continued the transformation, adding more residential units, along with commercial spaces, shops, and amenities, to create a vibrant, modern community. This phase also sought to enhance public access to open spaces, including gardens and walkways, to ensure a seamless connection to the surrounding areas.

Overall, both phases of the Chelsea Barracks development aim to create a prestigious, sustainable living environment while respecting the site's historical context.

Bank Station - Capacity Upgrade

The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade is a major infrastructure project aimed at expanding and modernizing Bank Underground Station in London. The development involves increasing station capacity to accommodate growing passenger numbers by adding new entrances, improving platforms, and upgrading escalators and tunnels. The project also includes creating a new Northern Line entrance and improving connectivity between various lines. The upgrade is designed to enhance passenger flow, reduce congestion, and improve overall accessibility and safety at one of London’s busiest stations.

SSF’s scope of works included, but not limited to:

  • Galvanized and primed mild steel various secondary steel elements

Battersea Power Station

Contractor: Mace

The Battersea Power Station redevelopment is a large-scale, mixed-use project transforming the iconic Grade II-listed power station into a vibrant hub of residential, commercial, and retail spaces. The development includes the restoration of the historic building, preserving its architectural features while incorporating modern design elements. New buildings and infrastructure, including apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities, are being added to create a dynamic community. The project also includes improvements to transport links, including the extension of the Northern Line, enhancing accessibility to the area. The redevelopment aims to breathe new life into this landmark site while maintaining its historical significance.

SSF were heavily involved in various cladding aspects for Battersea Power Station, these included but not limited to:

  • Landscape cladding stainless steel support systems
  • Proposed façade support bracketry
  • Internal cladding support bracketry

Crossrail

Crossrail, known as the Elizabeth Line, was a major railway development in London, designed to improve transport capacity and connectivity across the city. It involves the construction of new tunnels, stations, and upgrades to existing infrastructure, linking key locations from east to west, including areas such as Reading, Heathrow, and Abbey Wood. The line features state-of-the-art trains and modern stations, aiming to reduce travel times, ease congestion on the London Underground, and boost capacity across the city’s transport network.

SSF’s scope of works included, but not limited to:

Bloomberg London

Architect: Fosters
Main Contractor: Sir Robert McAlpine

The Bloomberg London Development, 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize winner, is Bloomberg’s European headquarters, located in the City of London. Designed by Foster + Partners and completed in 2017, the 10 storey and 3 levels of basement building is known for its sustainability, efficiency and innovative design. Due to the large floor plates, it spans 1.1 million square feet and houses around 4,000 employees. The project features natural ventilation, water-saving systems, and smart lighting, making it one of the world’s most sustainable office buildings with a BREEAM Outstanding rating. The site also includes the restored Mithraeum, an ancient Roman temple discovered during construction. The development represents Bloomberg’s commitment to cutting-edge workplace design and environmental responsibility.

SSF’s scope of works included, but not limited to:

  • Full external façade stainless steel supports and restraints
  • Galvanized and primed mild steel various secondary steel elements
  • Secondary steelwork for all breathable and non-breathable walls.

Johnnie Walker Princes Street (Edinburgh)

Johnnie Walker Princes Street, located in Edinburgh, is a state-of-the-art whisky visitor experience and the global brand home for Johnnie Walker. The development involved transforming a historic Category B-listed former department store into an immersive attraction that spans eight floors and approximately 71,500 square feet. Designed by a specialist architectural firm, the redevelopment carefully restored and extended the building while integrating modern interactive spaces. The main contractor led the complex refurbishment, ensuring the preservation of the original structure while introducing contemporary features. The building now offers interactive whisky tours, tastings, rooftop bars with panoramic views of Edinburgh, and personalized experiences using innovative technology to match whisky selections to visitors’ preferences. Previously home to retail establishments for nearly a century, including well-known department stores, the building was acquired and transformed into its current use, reopening in 2021. This development is part of a broader investment aimed at enhancing Scotch whisky tourism, celebrating over 200 years of Johnnie Walker’s history while providing a world-class destination for whisky enthusiasts.
