Sustainability

Sustainable buildings and sustainable sourcing are central to our philosophy

Our Sustainability Commitment

At SSF, we are committed to supporting the construction of the UK’s safest, highest-quality, and most sustainable buildings. Sustainability is central to how we operate — from the materials we source to the partnerships we build across our supply chain.

We recognise that construction plays a vital role in shaping the built environment, and we are dedicated to ensuring our products contribute to durable, responsible, and future-ready projects.

Our approach focuses on practical action: improving material efficiency, working with responsible suppliers, supporting industry innovation, and investing in the people who make our business possible.

Responsible Sourcing of Materials

At SSF we are committed to sourcing materials responsibly and working with suppliers who share our commitment to environmental improvement.

We work closely with our supply partners to ensure that materials are produced using more environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever possible. This includes encouraging the use of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production, increased recycled content, and continuous improvements in energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

By selecting suppliers who invest in lower-carbon production methods and responsible environmental management, we aim to reduce the overall environmental impact of the materials used in our products.

This approach also supports our wider sustainability commitments

Working Towards BES 6001

SSF is currently working towards BES 6001 certification, the BRE Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. BES 6001 assesses how responsibly construction materials are sourced throughout the entire supply chain. It examines areas such as environmental management, supply chain traceability, ethical sourcing, and responsible manufacturing practices.

For our customers, this means:

  • Greater confidence in the origin and traceability of materials
  • Assurance that products are sourced through responsible and ethical supply chains
  • Support for sustainability requirements on construction projects
  • Contribution toward BREEAM and other sustainability assessment credits

Achieving BES 6001 demonstrates our commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible sourcing across our operations and supply partners.
